- Salary: R 483 000 per annum

About the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF)
Over the past 18 years, the AKF has grown into a highly reputable civil society organisation in South Africa. We have built a solid media identity and a diverse range of advocacy products. As we expand our impact in 2026 and beyond, we are seeking a dynamic Communications Manager to develop, refine, and execute our robust organisational communications strategy.
Your Role & Responsibilities
- Strategic Planning: Develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan across social and earned media to support broad strategic objectives.
- Campaign Management: Design and implement agile, short-term communications plans for unfolding AKF campaigns and initiatives.
- Team Leadership: Oversee and mentor communication staff, including a Media Liaison / Social Media Officer and Communications Interns.
- Partner Collaboration: Coordinate with AKF partners to expand the reach and visibility of existing content.
- Brand Governance: Develop, maintain, and enforce the internal AKF style guide.
- Media Relations: Maintain and expand the press contacts list while building strong, long-term relationships with journalists.
- Media Pitching: Pitch reported stories, campaigns, and organisational priorities to TV, radio, digital, and print outlets.
- Content Creation: Draft, ghost-write, edit, and pitch opinion pieces (op-eds) and analysis articles for staff and Board members.
- PR & Support: Respond to incoming media inquiries and prepare spokespeople for interviews, panels, and public appearances.
- Digital Maintenance: Manage and update AKF’s digital communication platforms, and assist with fundraising or grant-writing initiatives as required.
Skills & Experience Required
- Experience: 1–2 years leading strategic advocacy within activist, political, or issue-based campaigns.
- Sector Background: 2–4 years of progressive media, marketing, or communications experience, ideally within civil society.
- Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
- Tech Stack: Working knowledge of Google Docs, Dropbox, Mailchimp, Everlytics, and Squarespace.
- Creative Tools: Strong graphic design skills (Canva or similar) and functional video editing experience.
- Core Competencies: Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with rigorous attention to detail.
- Contextual Knowledge: Deep understanding of South African history, policy issues, and current events.
- Attributes: Creative, self-motivated, collaborative, open to critique, and deeply passionate about social justice.
Bonus Points (Not Required):
- Master’s or advanced degree focusing on Communications or Media Studies.
- Working proficiency in one or more indigenous South African languages.
