The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation hosted the latest instalment of its Legacy Fundraising Breakfast Series, bringing together leaders, professionals and stakeholders from across the business community for an important conversation on transport, logistics and South Africa’s economic future. Featuring Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy, the breakfast explored the critical role of freight, rail and logistics infrastructure in reducing costs, strengthening competitiveness and enabling the efficient movement of goods to local and international markets. The discussion highlighted the importance of private-sector participation, infrastructure investment and public-private partnerships in supporting the reform of South Africa’s freight logistics system, including efforts to increase the movement of freight by rail and unlock investment across strategic rail and port projects. As South Africa works towards moving 250 million tonnes of freight by rail annually by 2030, the conversation reinforced a fundamental reality: transport is not only about moving people and goods — it is about enabling trade, investment, job creation and inclusive economic growth. The breakfast created a valuable platform for government, business and other stakeholders to exchange perspectives and reflect on the role each sector can play in building a more connected, competitive and inclusive economy.
