The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation expresses its profound outrage and unreserved condemnation regarding the illegal interception and detention of South African citizens and international activists participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The seizure of unarmed civilians in international waters is an act of state-sponsored lawlessness that seeks to silence the global conscience. This peaceful mission was a direct response to the unconscionable humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza—a crisis defined by forced starvation and the systematic denial of medical care.
Efforts to obstruct humanitarian aid and criminalize international solidarity cannot be justified under any pretext. This latest act of aggression follows a historical pattern of Israeli authorities obstructing solidarity missions. As an organisation rooted in the values of Ahmed Kathrada, we recognize this struggle; South Africans understand intimately that global solidarity is the lifeblood of liberation. Just as the world stood with us against the crime of apartheid, we must stand with those who brave the high seas to deliver hope to Gaza.
We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees. We further call on the South African government and the international community to hold the perpetrators of this maritime abduction accountable.
The Foundation reaffirms its commitment to the freedom of the Palestinian people. The walls of siege and occupation must fall, for human dignity is indivisible.
