JOHANNESBURG, 15 May 2026 – The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation welcomes the landmark ruling by Judge Nkosinathi Chili in the Pietermaritzburg High Court ordering that the corruption trial of former President Jacob Zuma and French arms company Thales proceed without further delay.
For more than two decades, this case has been delayed by what has become widely known as a “Stalingrad” strategy, marked by repeated interlocutory applications and appeals that have frustrated accountability. Yesterday’s ruling represents a significant step toward ensuring that the matter is finally heard. By directing that the trial commence on 1 February 2027 regardless of pending appeals, the court has affirmed both the interests of justice and the public’s right to see the rule of law upheld.
“The Foundation views this as a vital victory for South Africa’s constitutional democracy,” said Neeshan Balton, Executive Director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation. “Justice delayed is justice denied, not only for the accused but for the citizens of this country who have waited 21 years to see these serious allegations of fraud, racketeering, and money laundering ventilated in a court of law”.
The ruling sends a clear message that no individual, regardless of former office or political stature, is above the law. It also reinforces the principle that complex corruption cases must ultimately be resolved through due legal process and judicial scrutiny.
