The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation commends all those who courageously joined the Global Sumud Flotilla in their mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Their participation reflects a profound commitment to justice, dignity, and humanity.
We pay special tribute to the South African participants who endured detention and deportation by Israeli authorities after their boats were intercepted. Their willingness to risk personal hardship in solidarity with the Palestinian people embodies the highest traditions of principled activism.
The Foundation recognises that joining such a mission is an act of moral leadership. At a time when the suffering of the Palestinian people demands urgent and united action, the flotilla participants have strengthened the global call for respect for human rights, international law, and humanitarian access.
The Anadolu Agency reports that six flotilla participants remain in detention (from Norway, Spain, Morocco, and the United States). The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation calls for their immediate release. According to the Haifa-based legal centre Adalah, they are being held at Israel’s Saharonim and Ketziot prisons. No one acting in defence of life, dignity, and humanitarian relief should face undue detention or punishment.
We reiterate our conviction that:
- All states must respect the right to humanitarian assistance and ensure that aid reaches civilian populations without obstruction.
- Solidarity across borders remains essential in defending the oppressed, in keeping with the legacy of South Africa’s own anti-apartheid struggle.
We call on the Government of South Africa, civil society, and international partners to continue supporting those affected in Gaza, to demand accountability for violations of international humanitarian law, and to uphold the right of peaceful intervention in defence of human life.
The Foundation reaffirms that it is the duty of all; governments, organisations, and citizens alike; to act when humanity is under threat. We stand in solidarity with those who took part in the flotilla and honour the courage, compassion, and conviction that guided their actions.
