The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation welcomes the publication of an apology and acknowledgement by Jacobus Johannes Lloyd following proceedings before the South African Human Rights Commission.
In the signed statement, Lloyd apologises for using the derogatory term “Houtkoppe” during TikTok live broadcasts, acknowledges that the term constitutes hate speech, and undertakes not to use it again. He further agrees to participate in sensitivity training facilitated by the Commission.
While accountability after the fact is important, this matter also serves as a reminder of the harmful impact of racist and dehumanising language. Words are not harmless. They reinforce prejudice, perpetuate discrimination, and undermine efforts to build a society founded on dignity, equality and respect.
The Foundation believes that education, accountability and meaningful reflection are essential in confronting racism and promoting social cohesion. We encourage all South Africans to challenge hateful language and attitudes wherever they occur and to contribute towards building a more inclusive society.
The outcome of this matter demonstrates the important role of constitutional institutions in addressing discrimination and promoting human rights. It also highlights the need for ongoing public education about racism, hate speech and the responsibilities that accompany freedom of expression.
