As part of Anti-Racism Week 2026, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education (Sedibeng East District), facilitated an educational theatre experience for 120 learners at the Market Theatre.
Learners from 11 schools, ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 7, attended the production Skin We Are In, presented by the Windybrow Arts Centre and the Turquoise Harmony Institute, in partnership with ASSITEJ South Africa and the South African Human Rights Commission.
Through a combination of storytelling, music, and performance, the production introduced learners to themes of racism, identity, and belonging in ways that were accessible and age-appropriate.
Following the performance, learners participated in an interactive discussion with the cast, demonstrating a clear understanding of the issues presented and engaging thoughtfully on the importance of challenging discrimination.
The experience extended beyond the stage, with learners taking part in their own performances, using creative expression to communicate messages of inclusion, acceptance, and respect.

This initiative highlights the role of the arts in creating meaningful learning spaces, particularly for younger audiences. The Foundation views this as an important area for continued collaboration beyond Anti-Racism Week.
