The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement of the National Dialogue as a necessary step toward rebuilding our democracy, restoring social cohesion, and renewing our collective commitment to a united nation.
South Africans are known for their ability to face challenges head-on and work together to find solutions. That is why we commend this announcement. It speaks to the enduring spirit of unity and resilience that has defined our nation in its most difficult moments.
We commend the inclusive and people-led nature of the process, which draws from the rich tradition of dialogue that shaped our democratic breakthrough. At a time when inequality, corruption, and disillusionment threaten the social fabric of our country, this initiative provides a platform for all voices, especially those at the grassroots, to help reimagine and co-create the South Africa we want.
While we welcome the people listed in the Eminent Persons Group, as a reflection of the diversity, talent, and wisdom of our nation, we hope that room will be made for key sectors that have perhaps not been accommodated. Their guidance will be critical in making sure that the dialogue is credible, inclusive, and action oriented.
The Foundation also welcomes the inclusion of one of its board members, Nompendulo Mkhatshwa, in this group.
We encourage all South Africans to rally around the group and the initiative, as announced by the President, to build our country together. As a civil society organisation rooted in the legacy of Ahmed Kathrada, we stand ready to support the National Dialogue in mobilising communities, amplifying youth voices, and advancing the values of non-racialism, accountability, and democratic participation.
We look forward to contributing to this process of reflection, healing, and renewal.
