The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation is moved by the historic Homecoming of the remains of 42
freedom fighters who lost their lives in exile. Their return serves as a reminder of the sacrifices
made in the struggle against apartheid.
The unwavering commitment of our freedom fighters to securing a just, free, and democratic
South Africa will always be remembered.
We commend the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), its Missing Persons Task Team
(MPTT), and the Department of Justice’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Unit for
its tireless efforts in identifying the remains of those who gave their lives for our nation’s
liberation. Their diligent work has ensured that these heroes and heroines can finally be laid
to rest with the honour and dignity they deserve.
The return of these remains, coordinated by the Exhumation and Repatriation Programme
(ERP), is about more than closure for the families. It is a recognition of the huge debt we owe
to the brave men and women who fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy today. Their
courage and sacrifice are enshrined in South Africa’s progressive Constitution. A Constitution
which upholds rights to equality, dignity, and justice. Values for which these heroes gave their
lives.
This Homecoming Ceremony, held during Heritage Month, also serves as a reminder of the
shared history and struggle that bind all South Africans. As we commemorate 30 years of
democracy, it is important that we remember those who paid the ultimate price for the
freedoms we now cherish.
As we reflect on this event, we will continue to honour the legacy of our fallen comrades. We
will multiply our efforts to uphold the values for which they fought. Their courage and dedication
remain an inspiration to us all. We will continue to work towards the society they fought and
died for.
We express our deep gratitude to all the stakeholders involved. Including the governments of
Zimbabwe and Zambia, who have played an important role in facilitating the return of our
heroes. This collaboration demonstrates the spirit of solidarity that has always been central to
the struggle for liberation in Southern Africa.
We will never forget the sacrifices made by these freedom fighters. We will always allow their
memory to guide us in the continued fight for a better, more just world.
