The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing on of Comrade Suren Sukha (aged 65) on 3 July 2020 in Lenasia.
The Foundation extends its sincere condolences to the family, comrades and friends of Comrade Sukha, a leading anti-apartheid activist in the community and a former Treasurer and Chairperson of the ANC-Lenasia Branch.
Prior to the unbanning of the ANC in 1990, Comrade Sukha was an activist in the Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC) and the United Democratic Front (UDF). He also was active in the Federation of Residents’ Association (FRA) in Lenasia, which organised residents around bread and butter issues in the community.
Comrade Sukha matriculated at Lenasia Secondary School. He then studied Electrical Engineering at Trinity College in Dublin (Ireland), where he was active in the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement. He worked as an electrical engineer at Eskom, until his boarding due to ill health a few years ago.
Suren was a kind, humble, unassuming, principled and straightforward activist and leader. He was dedicated to the cause of the oppressed, the poor and the downtrodden in society. He worked tirelessly in the education and health sectors having served on the School Governing Body at Lenasia Secondary School and as a volunteer at the Jacksonsdrift Mobile Clinic in the 1980s.
Sadly, Lenasia has lost a deeply committed anti-apartheid activist and loyal resident. He is survived by his wife, Jyotika, and three children, Jaynesh, Asha and Ashika.
May his soul rest in peace! Hamba Kahle Comrade Suren!
