The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s annual Operation Winter Warm campaign will take place over the weekend of June 23 and 24.
The Foundation is encouraging the community to donate generously when volunteers knock on your doors.
The Foundation has further called on young and old to volunteers their time over the weekend to help make Operation Winter Warm a community success.
Volunteers will embark on a door-to-door collection drive in Lenasia and Lenasia South, asking for donations of clothes, books, blankets and non-perishable food items which will be packaged and distributed to the less fortunate.
Those who will be going door-to-door asking for donations will be wearing Ahmed Kathrada Foundation T-shirts. Others, who will be based at the Lenasia Cricket Stadium, which is the nerve centre of operations, will sort through the items and have them packaged for beneficiaries.
Community members who may not be at home for the entire day are encouraged to drop off their donations at the stadium’s Glass House.
All volunteers will receive certificates for their role in ensuring that Operation Winter Warm is a success.
“The initiative has grown massively over the past five years, with young people being at the forefront of organising and running the campaign,” said the Foundation’s Kabelo Kemp.
“Operations Winter Warm serves to not only revive the spirit of volunteerism, but also encourages our community to do its bit to help the poor and needy. We hope that this year, residents donate even more than they have before.”
Operation Winter Warm has benefited various homes catering for underprivileged children and victims of shack fires and other disasters.
* Residents are encouraged to drop off items at the Lenasia Cricket Stadium Glass House, Hummingbird Street, Ext 1, on June 23 and 24. Alternatively, drop off your items at the following points during the week: Lenasia Rising Sun, Tiba Services for the Blind, Jiss, the Gandhi Hall, Stylostelecoms, Azaadville Muslim School or Gibson Pillay Learning Academy (Lenasia South).
