The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation extends its congratulations to Andrew Mlangeni and George Bizos on receiving the Freedom of the City of Johannesburg.

The Rivonia Trial accused and lawyer were conferred the Freedom of the City by Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau today.

Struggle veteran and freeman of Johannesburg, Ahmed Kathrada, said that he was “particularly pleased” that the two had been honoured for their contribution to the liberation struggle.

“The Freedom of the City is the highest accolade that can be bestowed on a resident. It is awarded to those who have served the city, and in this instance, to two people who have contributed immensely to our freedom and democracy. It is fitting that Comrades Mlangeni and Bizos have been honoured in this way,” Kathrada said.

Kathrada, who was present at the ceremony, added that he hoped this would encourage youth to learn about the histories of the two stalwarts. “One is recognising their contribution to society, but we hope that young people, especially those living in and around the city, read up about their legacies. In this way, we can ensure that their values and selfless struggle remain a guiding light for generations to come.”

The Foundation’s director, Neeshan Balton, echoed Kathrada’s views, saying that Bizos and Mlangeni’s values epitomised the principles of the Rivonia generation.

“The Foundation congratulates the two stalwarts. We also commend the City for awarding Mlangeni and Bizos, and in turn ensuring that the history of its struggle veterans are preserved and promoted,” Balton said.
