Opening of the Ahmed Kathrada Site of Remembrance

An event marking the opening of the Ahmed Kathrada Site of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, 20 August at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg. </p> <p>The site, which is symbolic of an open Robben Island cell, will be situated at Kathrada's grave. </p> <p>The site opening forms part of the national programme of tributes launched last month in Kathrada's hometown, Schweizer Reneke.</p> <p>Kathrada, who would have been turning 88 years on Monday, will be honoured by various tributes at the event, celebrating the various aspects of his life, which range from politics, youth activism and friendships.</p> <p>

Essay Awards Ceremony

JUNE
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation together with Khwera Ye Afrika will host an awards ceremony, where the top 30 essay writers will receive certificates before the announcement of the top 3. The two organisations earlier this year hosted an essay writing competition on the issue of race. The competition drew in some 700 submissions from around the country.
