Kathrada’s Legacy

Following the passing of Ahmed Kathrada in 2017, the Foundation will ensure that his story and contribution to our democracy continues inspiring people. The Foundation will continue hosting events that allow people to reflect on his legacy, as well as distribute
material, such as school workbooks, on his life.

Through its ongoing collection of archival material, the Foundation aims to house the most comprehensive historical repository on Kathrada’s life. Kathrada’s gravesite at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg will feature a garden of remembrance and annually, the Foundation will commemorate his birth and death anniversary, as well other notable historic occasions that characterised his life.
The Foundation will also endeavour to continue advocating for the values and principles that he stood for including integrity, selfless leadership, dedicated activism and non-racialism.
